Sony Home Online Virtual World Launch Very Soon

Sony said that it would launch its online 3-D social networking service (Home) for users of the companys PlayStation 3 video-game console. Home is similar to Linden Labs Second Life in that it lets people create virtual characters, or avatars, to interact in cyberspace. PlayStation 3 users will be able to join the virtual world through a free software download.

Home is the latest online service for the PS3. Sony recently added video downloads to the PlayStation Network, which, according to the company, has 15 million subscribers worldwide. Nevertheless, Sony is seen as behind rival Microsoft, which makes the Xbox 360, in launching online gaming and video-download services.

In addition, Nintendo, which launched its Wii video-game console the same month as Sony launched PS 3, November 2006, has outsold Sony more than 2-to-1. Nintendo has sold 34.5 million units worldwide, compared with Sonys 16.8 million units.
Sony is hoping Home will help take its struggling video games unit to profitability. The unit has lost about $3.8 billion over the last two years, according to BusinessWeek magazine.

While PS3 users will enter Home for free, Sony hopes to make money by charging companies to interact with participants. The first companies to join Home include clothing designer Diesel, furniture designer Ligne Roset, energy drink maker Red Bull, film studio Paramount Pictures, and video content providers Hexus TV and Eurogamer.

Besides offering mini-games, videos, and special events, Home will craft it possible for users to create their own social networks and set up meetings in their own virtual apartments or in public gatherings. Home will offer instant messaging, voice, and video communications.

Sony first announced Home in March 2007, saying it would launch the service later that year. The company announced the first delay in October 2007, and again in April 2008. Sony launched a trial of the service to a limited number of PS3 users in August.

Samsung Eternity

The Eternity has all the hallmarks of a touch screen phone. It has a rectangular candy bar shape with a slim profile (4.3 inches by 2.2 inches by 0.5 inch) and a large display. The Eternity is 3.88 ounces, a bit lighter than some of its counterparts, but it retains a sturdy feel in the hand. The black color scheme is simple but attractive we like the glossy material that surrounds the display and the shiny metal spines.

Our only gripe concerns the plastic battery cover a metal cover is preferable. At 3.2 inches the Eternitys display falls between the Instinct and the Behold in size. It should make it adequate for most users, whether youre browsing menus or typing on the virtual keyboard. Its also bright and vibrant with support for 262.000 colors (400 x 240 pixels). Photos and graphics were sharp and the text is readable.

You can change the brightness, the backlighting time, and the font type. Below the display sit three physical keys. Talk and End buttons and a back key.

Theyre a tad slick, but its a minor issue. The touch interface is responsive and easy to use, though you can adjust the calibration if you have problems.

We had no issues selecting items and scrolling through long menus. The vibrating feedback is helpful, and you can adjust its intensity.

Like the other Samsung phones in its class, the Eternity shows Samsungs unique and accessible TouchWiz interface. AT&T added some of its own widgets including a shortcut for the Mobile TV application. Check out our Behold review for a full description of TouchWiz. Theres a second shortcut bar at the bottom of the display that gives one touch access to the phone dialer, your contacts list, and the main menu.

And speaking of which, the menu comes in an icon or list design. Both are intuitive with a variety of easily accessible features. The Eternity phone book 1,000 contacts phone book with room in each entry for multiple phone numbers, emails, and URLs. You also can add a street address, a company name and job title, a nickname, a birthday, and notes (the SIM card holds an additional 250 names).

You can save callers to groups and you can pair them with a photo and one of 11 72 chord, polyphonic ringtones. Though thats a paltry number of included ringtones, you can use your own audio files and MP3 tracks as tones. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a calendar, a calculator, a notepad, a task list, an alarm clock, a world clock, a timer, a stopwatch, a currency and unit converter, and a speaker phone.

Gateway P 7811FX

The new P-7811FX manages to fix most of the issues we had with those earlier Gateway budget gaming laptops. It bumps the processor all the way up to a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 and the Centrino 2 platform, adds Nvidias new GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card, and ups the screen resolution to an HD friendly 1,920x1,200. Amazingly, it does all of this for $1,449. Sure, the P-7811FX costs about $100 more than those previous models, but for the PC gamer on a budget, we dont know of a better deal on a laptop right now.

Specification
  • Price as reviewed $1,449
  • Processor 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400
  • Memory 4GB, 667MHz DDR3
  • Hard drive 200GB 7.200rpm
  • Chipset Intel P45
  • Graphics Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS
  • Operating System Windows Vista Premium (64-bit)
  • Dimensions (WDH) 15.7 x 12.2 x 1.6 inches
  • Screen size (diagonal) 17.1 inches
  • System weight, Weight with AC adapter 9.0/10.5 pounds
  • Category Desktop Replacement

Gateways FX line of laptops, including the P-7811FX, skips the glowing alien heads and flashing lights of 17 inch gaming rigs from Alienware or Dell. Instead, it features a glossy black plastic chassis, with brushed aluminum detailing and copper accents around the keyboard. It makes for a subdued, yet sporty, look (although, it attracts fingerprints like crazy). The full size keyboard and separate number pad have roomy, comfortable keys.

Above the keyboard is a row of media controls, with buttons cut right into the brushed metal border. These backlit buttons look cool, but are not as easy to use as the touch sensitive controls found on most new laptops. There is one touch sensitive control a volume slider which is responsive, but adjusts the volume too slowly for our tastes.

One of our chief complaints about the Gateway 6860FX and 6831FX models was concerning the 1,440x900 pixel display resolution, which is fine for an upscale 15 inch laptop, but not great for a 17 inch desktop replacement. Gateway apparently heard our gripes and upgraded the screen to the same 1,920x1,200 resolution one found on high end gaming and multimedia laptops. Its also great for downloading and viewing HD video content, and almost makes us wish we could pay a little more for a Blu-ray drive.

Sadly, Gateway doesnt offer a Blu-ray equipped model anywhere in its 17 inch P series. If your idea of entertainment drifts toward HD movies and away from 3D games, the HP Pavilion dv7-1025nr will hold some appeal. HPs $1,499 desktop replacement doesnt offer quite the graphics horsepower of the Gateway P-7811FX, but some models in the line feature a Blu-ray drive, and the laptop boasts a unique "frameless" bezel.

LG G2 coming to O2 and Three in UK

After the launch of the new LG flagship, G2 - everyone has been waiting to see which carriers would get the handset.

LG had a nasty history of being very selective on where they release their flagships, some handsets not even making the UK / European markets because of immature 4G. Up until next month only EE offer 4G so I guess they had a point, really we are stuck on 2yr contracts and EE offered some good insensitive to move mid contract, Vodafone and O2 would have done the same, come 4G being available on their networks very soon. That being said, I disagree with their strategy.

Its Three that has no 4G that were first to say they will carry the handset, O2 followed. No word from EE but if you are planning to walk into Phones4U and get one next months, you will be turned away. P4U have said they will not stock the phone, while Carphone Warehouse have pegged an October release date on their website.

Seems the UK are missing out on some good incoming handsets, Sony ZR may not come here, Motorola disappointed Europe with no Moto X anytime soon, and LG G2 will not be easy to get hold of.

Want to see some LG G2 ?

iCloud The new way to store and access your content

What is iCloud? iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents, and more. And wirelessly pushes them to all your devices — automatically. It’s the easiest way to manage your content. Because now you don’t have to.
iCloud is so much more than a hard drive in the sky. It’s the effortless way to access just about everything on all your devices. iCloud stores your content so it’s always accessible from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.* It gives you instant access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. In fact, no anything required. iCloud does it all for you.
When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. And that’s plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content. Your purchased music, apps, and books, as well as your Photo Stream, don’t count against your free storage. That leaves your mail, documents, Camera Roll, account information, settings, and other app data. And since those things don’t use as much space, you’ll find that 5GB goes a long way.
When you update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 5, your favorite Apple apps become seamlessly integrated with iCloud. Just like that. So all your content and information is available and up to date, no matter which device you’re using.

Samsung SPH M520

The SPH-M520 has a design that weve seen many times before from Samsung. In case you havent noticed, were growing a little tired of the thin slider phone trend. However, since Samsung keeps pumping them out, we might be in the minority. At 4.01 inches by 2.04 inches by 0.5 inch and 2.75 ounces the SPH-M520 is neither too big nor too small it slips easily into a pocket and it wont weigh you down.

The slider mechanism is sturdy enough but we could still open and close the phone with one hand. The SPH-M520s 262,000 colors display measures a generous 2.1 inches (176x220 pixels). Like many Samsung displays, its bright and colorful and shows just about everything well. You can change the brightness, the back lighting time, and the dialing font size and color.

The basic menu interface is easy to use but Samsung added a new layer to the standby screen. There you will find shortcut icons to seven functions the main menu, the On Demand content, Sprint TV, the Sprint Music Store, email, GPS, and a menu for checking your Sprint account balance.

You can cycle though the options while pressing the navigation toggle and make your selection with the OK key. Its a convenient arrangement but you can turn it off and use the traditional toggle shortcuts instead.

The navigation controls are well designed and are much better than many slider phones. The square toggle is large and is raised above the surface of the SPH-M520.

We had no problem thumbing through the menus and selecting options using the tactile OK button. Surrounding the toggle are two soft keys, a dedicated speaker phone button (nice), a Back key and the Talk and End or power controls. The keypad buttons are also released and are neatly separated form each other. Quick texters shouldnt have a problem.

Finishing the exterior of the phone are a volume rocker and the charger port or headset jack on the left spine and a camera shutter key and the microSD card slot on the right spine. The SPH-M520 has a 500-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an email address, a Web address, a nickname, and notes. You can save contacts to groups and pair them with a photo and one of 19 (72 chords) polyphonic ringtones for caller ID.

Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a file manager, a speaker phone, a calendar, a scheduler, a voice recorder, an alarm clock, a memo pad, a calculator, a countdown timer, a task list and a world clock. Youll also find stereo Bluetooth, USB mass storage, GPS support with Telenav access, voice dialing and commands, wireless backup for your contacts, modem capability, email and instant messaging and PC syncing. The SPH-M520 also offers audible caller ID that will route through to a Bluetooth headset.

Lenovo IdeaPad U110

The Lenovo IdeaPad U110 is imperceptibly smaller than one of our favorite 11.1 inch ultra portables, the Sony VAIO TZ150. It gives up 2 inches in screen size to the 13.3 inch MacBook Air, but the U110 weighs a full pound less (when using its four cell battery). Toshibas Portege R500, on the other hand, weighs less just 1.7 pounds and gives you an extra inch with its 12 inch screen.

Aside from its diminutive size and stunning design, the IdeaPad U110 is remarkable in its sturdy construction, thanks to an aluminum cover and magnesium aluminum case. The sturdy construction seems to owe something to Lenovos business focused ThinkPad line. But the IdeaPad U110 is considerably different from the companys other flagship ultra portable, the $2,476 ThinkPad X300.

The latter maintains the familiar ThinkPad DNA rectangular black case, great keyboard, and such corporate friendly features as WWAN and a Trusted Platform Module while still allowing for innovation in design and cutting edge components. The IdeaPad U110, on the other hand, is focused on the consumer market, and as such gives Lenovo more freedom to experiment with design while still incorporating new technologies.

Speaking more concretely, the 11.1 inch, 2.4 pound IdeaPad U110 is considerably smaller than the 13.3 inch, 3.4 pound ThinkPad X300. The entire keyboard deck on the IdeaPad U110 including the keyboard, touch pad, mouse buttons, and quick launch keys is one flush surface, all in a glossy piano finish. At first the flatness of the keys, and the lack of space between them, had us worried about typing comfort.

But closer inspection revealed that the keys have a slightly concave surface, and while the keyboard did feel noticeably less than full size, typing was remarkably comfortable and error free. Part of the reason Lenovo extended the keyboard quite nearly to the edges of the system, similar to the HP 2133 Mini Note, to accommodate larger keys than would ordinarily be found on such a compact laptop.

Unfortunately a concession had to be made when it came to the touch pad the IdeaPad U110s narrow depth means the touch pad sits uncomfortably low on the keyboard deck, and its mouse buttons are part of the laptops front edge. We were able to complete a days work with this setup, but would likely want to pack a travel mouse for better ergonomics on lengthy trips. Also, the meticulous among us might be put off by the shiny interior, which easily picks up fingerprints. (Lenovo does include a chamois cloth to help you keep the IdeaPad U110 looking sharp.)

Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX

This 12 pound tank is one of only a handful of boutique laptops that have enough cooling fans to run a 3.33 GHz, Intel Core i7 975 processor the top of the line desktop processor, no less. Surround the CPU with an excellent supporting cast nVidia GeForce 280M GTX graphics card, 6GB of memory, and three internal hard drives (one of which is an 80GB SSD), and its competitors can only watch helplessly while they get pulverized in performance tests.

Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX is in essence a 12 pound refrigerator, built to cool a ferociously fast processor. Rarely does a gaming laptop cross the 10 pound barrier these days the 9.4 pound Alienware M17 and the 8.9 pound Gateway P7808u FX Edition seem like lightweights alongside Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX. The design lacks inspiration, as the boxy plastic frame is absent of any curves, metallic accents, or fashionable LEDs.

The style of these particular frames is determined by their makers, Taiwanese manufacturers (Clevo or Compal, in this case) that sell them as bare bones frames populated with parts purchased separately by these boutique vendors. Falcon, however, does specialize in custom paint jobs. Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX can be machine painted with any color imaginable, reminiscent of how automobiles receive their paint jobs. You can also get a custom hand painted design, depending on the request, for a hefty fee (anywhere from $400 to $600).

Wrong Number Generator Makes Dialing Exciting

Phone wires with connectorIf you really want to screw with someone, put this Wrong Number Generator on their landline. When your victim (wife) tries to make a call, itll screw up some digits and randomly dial someone. Better yet, it only does this 75% of the time, meaning that itll let them dial the right number 25% of the time—which allows them to think that theyve got the sloppiest fingers in the world.

We thought this would be even more exciting when someones trying to dial 911, but apparently it lets all of those calls through unmolested.
